Thanks to the use of mass spectrometry, coupled with pre-analytical methods (like liquid nanochromatography) and dedicated softwares, proteomics makes it possible to study the identity, post-translational modifications and dynamics of proteins and multi-protein complexes that are present in a cell, tissue or organism. Proteomics has reached such a degree of maturity that it has now the ability to handle increasingly complex requests, such as analyses of kinetic studies or clinical cohorts to answer fundamental or clinical biological questions. This evolution requires the ability to analyze, visualize and interpret massive amounts of data.

ProFI is the national proteomics infrastructure. In addition to the R&D efforts undertaken, ProFI's mission is to offer academic laboratories and manufacturers a service of quality  in proteomic analysis through collaborations or paid services, and to irrigate the many French proteomics platforms by sharing the know-how and tools developed by the infrastructure.
